Well, yes, if they go about it in the right way.
Marketing research companies have been taking surveys for many years. Recently, the reach, the low cost and the fast response time of the Internet has been attracting more and more survey activity away from the traditional mail, door to door, shopping mall interviews and telephone methods of reaching target populations.
If you are on the Internet for any length of time you will have encountered free surveys. You might even have filled out a few. But, after awhile, if you are like most folks, you just say, “Yeah, yeah…” and click off to something more interesting.
To counter this and get people to pay serious attention, many survey companies have taken the tact of offering monetary rewards, payment in dollars, to people who take the time to fill out surveys. That is where the money comes from.
But not just anyone gets paid. Strangers needn’t apply. You see, survey results are only relevant for the specific “population” for which they are targeted. The company that contracted the market research company to make a survey, wants to know things about how its customers react, think and feel.
If they are selling laundry detergent, for example, they want to know what the users think, what the buyers think. So their target population might be women ages 18-90 who keep house within the geographical area where their product is distributed. They want to exclude kids living at home where mama handles the laundry, military personnel on active duty, people in countries where their product is unavailable, etc.
So the way the system works is that first off, the survey-makers offer to pay survey-takers. Then they solicit and accept applications from prospective survey-takers who want to be considered for these paid surveys when they come up.
In the application they get all the demographic details about the prospective survey-taker. Name, age, sex, where they live, contact info, education level, income level, occupation, hobbies, interests and so forth. This info establishes the prospect’s profile, which will later be used to pick out which individuals match the target population of a particular study by survey.
Then, as surveys are contracted, designed and funded, the questionnaires go out. They are either sent out to the selected survey-takers by e-mail or an e-mail is sent inviting the survey taker to click on a link and be taken to the survey questions page. The survey taker takes the survey, fills out the questionnaire and the survey making company sends him or her a check for their time, opinion and trouble.
And so, the answer to the question, “Can a person really make money taking surveys online?” is yes. Absolutely.
Of course, you will need a good guide company to connect you up with the right survey makers. But then, that goes beyond “Can one…” into “How does one…” which is another subject entirely…

Can you really make $3,000 a month filling out surveys? The answer is no, yes, and …it depends.
How no? Well, look at the math. The average paid survey pays $10 to $25. If you only filled out $25 surveys, you would need to fill out 120 surveys a month or 4 per day. Or 10 $10 surveys per day. Or some combination in-between. Generally the availability and the qualifying works against your achieving that by restricting the number of surveys and the target population.
There are not always that many paid surveys available, looking for takers. Sometimes yes and sometimes no. At any given time the sheer volume of surveys that pay in cash is not unlimited. So you may be ready willing and able, but there may not be enough surveys in your inbox to generate the volumes you would need.
And when there are more than enough paid surveys, there may not be enough aimed at the ‘valued opinion niche’ that you occupy. Some surveys are aimed at stay-at-home housewives with kids. Some are aimed at men over 60. Others are aimed at unmarried young people between the ages of 18 and 35. Still others will specify residents of Northern California. Obviously you cannot qualify for all. So while the sheer volume of available surveys may be adequate, your personal situation and demographics may prevent you from qualifying for enough of them to make $3,000 a month.
In fact, most survey takers report that while it is relatively easy to make $500 to $1,000 a month taking paid surveys, making any more than that is problematic. And so, on that basis, the answer to the $3,000 question is no.
How yes? The answer is to expand your concept and vision of what is involved. Go beyond the narrow definition of paid online surveys into the larger world of varied activities with similar results. Activities that put cash in your pocket without the necessity of you having to show up for a regular job.
The first thing to add is participating in focus groups. These are informal discussion groups, put together by the same agencies that send out paid surveys, with the purpose of discussing how you feel about some area of interest to marketers. You meet physically or via an Internet chat room type of connection and kick a subject around. One person’s answer sparks another’s comment while the moderator takes notes and records the session.
A subject might be, “How do you decide which laundry detergent to buy?” There is no single answer. Different people buy different products at different times for varying reasons. These reasons and their thinking at the moment is extremely interesting to whomever is running the ad campaign for a brand of washday detergent. Focus group participants get paid more, generally $50 to $250, depending on the subject and length of time required.
Then there are activities like mystery shopping, mystery restaurant guests, even mystery golfers. In these you can get paid to try something out, as though you were any other customer. Then you give a detailed evaluation of the experience to the marketing people who want to improve the experience for their paying customers.
Add to that similar paid activities for going to the movies, attending amusement parks, getting paid for driving your car with an advertisement on it… the list goes on. When you include and add up the income potential of all of these and similar activities, the answer becomes Yes, you can make $3,000 per month in cumulative income streams. This is especially true if you include the value of products and services received for free, just to try them out and report on your experiences.
And lastly, How, “it depends?” The amount of income you can really make depends on how you think about it and how diligently you work at it. If you define the idea of taking paid surveys to include similar activities to make money, the amount you can make at it goes up considerably. And, if you really work at it, perhaps $3,000 a month is not out of reach.

There’s money to be made taking paid online surveys. The trick is to find and concentrate on the surveys that pay in cash or equivalent (such as points that can be redeemed in cash) and avoid those that pay with a form of lottery ticket. Also, you need to avoid those that will not respect your privacy and will sell your address to others.
The first step to accomplishing these goals is to pick a good, reputable paid survey program that you join as a member. Avoid the “free” offers. Free offers are usually made by people getting paid to recruit names and addresses of the gullible. You want to make sure that you are paying the Program that you want to guide you, so that their loyalty is to you and not to someone who wants to use you and waste your time.
In selecting the paid survey program to join, consider these factors:
1. Size and market position. You want someone who has been around a while, is substantial, and won’t disappear on you.
2. Guarantee. Look for at least a strong 60 day guarantee. This ensures that the paid survey program you join will be very interested in making sure that you get off to a good start and are pleased with the way things are going for at least the time of the guarantee. Also it means that if all else fails, at least you get your initial membership fee back.

Sign up with as many of these survey-making companies as you can, preferably with all. This will take some time and paperwork, but it will pay off in the long run. This is important. You must let the companies who send out surveys know that you are in the market and are ready willing and able to take the surveys they send.
Most will have some kind of pre-qualification to establish your demographic profile. This may be included in your application or they may send you a detailed questionnaire to fill out. Be sure and respond to these promptly. They will need a demographic profile to know to whom they should send which survey.
Do not expect immediate results. You should begin receiving surveys to take within a week or so after filling out the application to the survey maker.
3. When you receive surveys to take, don’t let them languish in your inbox. Respond quickly and completely. Answer all the questions to the best of your ability. Prompt and complete response will help you get more surveys to take sooner.
